Competing Response Training

Designing for Behavior Change

Competing response training involves substituting an unwanted habit with a physically incompatible action. For a social media addiction, this might mean engaging in a hands-on activity like drawing whenever the urge to check social media arises. For the habit of waking up late, it could involve placing an alarm far from the bed, requiring physical movement to turn it off. This method helps break habitual patterns by introducing alternative actions./n/n In a study by Azrin and Nunn (1973), participants with nail-biting habits were taught to clench their fists as a competing response whenever they felt the urge to bite their nails. This led to a remarkable 99% reduction in nail-biting behavior in the treatment group, demonstrating the effectiveness of competing response training in significantly decreasing unwanted habits.
